The Trumpet of the Swan
Children’s author E B White closes out his incredibly successful trifecta of children’s books with “The Trumpet of the Swan.” The book tells the story of Louis, a trumpeter swan born mute. Without a voice, Louis finds other ways to distinguish himself, learning to read and write and eventually play the trumpet, and later on befriending humans and falling in love. Louis learns the guilt that comes after thievery, has a grand time at the Ritz Hotel, and bugles at a summer camp, all to chase the love of his life, Serena. This is a wonderful story about overcoming difficulties and finding love in spite of the odds, and the humor of the book makes it engaging to young readers. I loved this book when I read it, and reread it multiple times even as I got older. If your child enjoyed this book, they should look at the other two children’s books White wrote: “Charlotte’s Web” and “Stuart Little,” both of which feature intelligent animals trying to live in the human world.
