The Hobbit
This classic by J.R.R. Tolkien follows Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit who lives a comfortable life in the Shire, until Gandalf the wizard asks him to join an expedition to reclaim the lost treasure and ancient home of thirteen dwarves. As the book progresses, Bilbo and his party face new obstacles, each more dangerous than the last, on their way to Lonely Mountain where Smaug the dragon guards the dwarves’ treasure. Bilbo and the dwarves face trolls, goblins, giant spiders and Wood-Elves on their journey, aided only by their wits and a mysterious and powerful ring with a deep secret. Tolkien’s precise imagery and worldbuilding are only part of what makes “The Hobbit” and enticing read. This is a great book for kids with more of a fantasy or historical bent, but I’m sure most kids would enjoy Bilbo Baggins’ adventure outside his comfort zone. If your kid loved “The Hobbit,” Tolkien also wrote the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy in the same world, which might be a long read but is so worth it.
