The Alchemyst

This six-book series by Michael Scott is wonderful for kids with an interest in mythology mixed with fantasy. The series, starting with “The Alchemyst,” follows twins Sophie and Josh Newman as they discover alternate worlds and planes of existence while developing their own magical abilities with the titular Nicholas Flamel and his wife Perenelle. These books are chock-full of vibrant storytelling, breathless adventure, as well as references to almost every mythological story under the sun. This is a series about loyalty as well as betrayal, self-discovery, and most of all, magic. Michael Scott’s storytelling is so compelling in this series, and kids who are fans of mythology will love being able to recognize each name from a different tale. Children who are fans of “The Alchemyst” will dive right into the next book, “The Magician,” as well as the four after that.
