James and the Giant Peach
In Roald Dahl's “James and the Giant Peach,” James Trotter, a young orphan, lives with his abusive and malicious aunts until a mysterious man gives him magical crystals that grow a gigantic peach. James embarks on a journey in the peach itself with other magically enhanced garden creatures with the ability to talk, such as the friendly Ladybug, the pessimistic Earthworm, and the wise and musical Grasshopper. This book is very surreal, and goes very quickly from the mundane landscape of James’ aunts to the ocean and the sky to New York City. This is a very fun read, and the characters are wacky as well as entertaining. Kids who enjoyed this book might also like “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” or “Fantastic Mr. Fox.”
