Black Beauty

This story about a horse named Black Beauty by Anna Sewell is a heartwarming, sometimes sad tale of survival, kindness, and love. On the surface, “Black Beauty” is about kindness towards animals, but the novel also has deeper themes of showing kindness and mercy to everyone. “Black Beauty” is told by the horse himself in first person. He narrates the story of his life, from his easygoing days as a young foal to the harsh treatment he received pulling cabs in London. Black Beauty’s voice is very strong in this book, and his relatability and tales of both kindness and cruelty will stir compassion in any reader. After I read this book, I looked at animal treatment, especially horses, much differently, and I’m sure reading it will do the same for your child. My well worn copy of this book is a testament to how much I love it. I would say this is a almost a necessary read: it’s not only such a compelling and beautiful story but contains wonderful messages that aren’t too on the nose.
